Exile on Obelle - Snippet from RISHALT for #WeWriWa #SciFiRom

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

I took a break last weekend, but I'm back today with another snippet from Rishalt, Book 2 of Taxyon Space.

Blurb
Kiron Arqin Ramis is summoned home by his family to the unwanted honor of a new triad and union with a high-ranked female. Unable to forget Nikki, he endures a perilous exile on a wilderness planet instead of complying with his family’s demands. But, the Triarchs have other plans for him.
Stakes are higher than the lives of two individuals. Earth leaders are desperate to acquire the aliens’ interstellar technology, while Warrish dispute the benefit of an alliance with inferiors. Can Nikki and Kiron pierce the barriers separating them to find happiness with provoking an unequal war?

Following the conventions of Warrish society, Kiron’s parents have betrothed him and his brother to young women of superior rank. Unfortunately, Kiron would prefer the “primitive Earther” Nikki. He was given three days to reflect.
You can read the snippet from two weeks ago –

I have skipped to the next chapter so you can learn the outcome of Kiron’s three days of reflection.
The snippet has been edited to fit, mostly by inserting semicolons.

On the third planet of a distant solar system, Kiron stood within a stockade of tall metal posts, and stared at the expanse of green ocean. His triad of guards had left him alone in the bleak enclosure on the wilderness planet, Obelle. During the past half year, he had spent intervals locked in a cell without a triad or anyone else; the judges often deemed it the severest penalty for disobedience, but he had become inured to solitude, and had learned to take comfort in his own company. Life alone was preferable to being forced into another triad and unwanted union.
He thought of his Earther lover, the marine biologist, Dr. Nikki Bell; she must have been devastated when he did not appear with the Warrish delegation. He had been summoned to Rishalth, not in disgrace, but to what his family deemed an honor and a promising future. He had obeyed, not eagerly, rather in hope of reconciliation and perhaps, their acknowledgement of his worth. Instead, his hexath of parents had insisted he comply with their scheme; they had sent him into exile as punishment when he pleaded for time.
Overwhelmed with emotion, he dropped onto his knees and buried his head in his arms; how could he persuade his family to release him from this unwanted match and allow him to return to Nikki on Europa? He had no solution, except to endure his exile for the present.

Forget that Primitive Earther - Snippet from RISHALT for #WeWriWa #SciFiRom

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

I’m still posting snippets from Rishalt, Book 2 of Taxyon Space. Also, I've switched to a new cover.

Kiron’s brother Bassath has shown him pictures of the lovely ladies. As youngsters, the brothers were close companions, but they have grown apart during the four years Kiron served as a Watcher on Europa.
You can read last week’s snippet here –
Bassath insinuated, “Have your four years in the masculine enclave of Watchers dulled your appreciation of female company?”
Note: Minor abuse of semicolons to fit.

Kiron replied bluntly, “I thank you, but I prefer to choose my own mates.” Would Bassath appreciate his dilemma? He could not decide.
As if he suspected the truth, Bassath asked, “What is the source of your reluctance? Why don’t you welcome this match with the beauteous granddaughters of noble Rostras?”
“I met an Earther woman in the waters of their moon, Europa.” Kiron stumbled through an explanation, “Saved her from death on the ice; we met in secret; she’s sweet and brave, and she became precious to me.”
“You became intimate with a two-breasted alien?” Bassath groaned, “Oh Kiron, you are worthy of a better mate than a primitive Earther.” He gestured to the images. “Our union with Rostras’s granddaughters offers prestige and resources. If you wish, you can bring your Earther woman to Rishalt; give her a landhouse on Pucklerakt, and slip out to visit her without the knowledge of your legal mate.”

Lovely ladies - Snippet from RISHALT for #WeWriWa #SciFi Romance

Happy Easter or Passover to all who celebrate.
Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

I’m still posting snippets from Rishalt, Book 2 of Taxyon Space, but may be moving to another story soon.

Blurb
Dr. Nikki Bell is devastated when the Watchers reappear without her alien lover. Why did Kiron return to his home planet without even leaving a message? In search of answers, Nikki jumps at the chance to join the diplomatic team invited to visit the aliens’ home world. On Rishalt, she must contend with the intricacies of Warrish society and an undercurrent of hostility.

Kiron has been summoned to his home planet by his family. Note, in Warrish society, adults form triads, units of three men or three women, often siblings. Their families arrange unions (marriages) between the members of a male triad and a female triad. Usually, the Firsts of each triad will form a pair, and likewise the two Seconds and Thirds are matched. Following the conventions of his society, Kiron’s parents have betrothed him to a young woman of superior rank.

You can read last week’s snippet here –
I have skipped to the end of the chapter. Kiron is visiting his brother Bassath after a separation of four years while Kiron served as a Watcher on Europa.
Note: Minor abuse of grammar to fit.

“Now we are comfortable,” Bassath said, “let me show you our future brides.” Flicking his fingers, he displayed the images of the three sisters. “Aren’t the Brisa lovely?” Bassath breathed. “Don’t you long to embrace their lush figures?”
Sipping his wine, Kiron gazed at the elegant ladies. Their beauty only reminded him of Nikki; he yearned to kiss her sweet lips and embrace her supple body. Keeping his tone flat, he said, “As you say, they are lovely.”
“You don’t sound enthusiastic, brother,” Bassath complained. He shot a quizzical look at Kiron’s stoic face, “Have your four years in the masculine enclave of Watchers dulled your appreciation of female company?”
“Not at all,” Kiron attempted to laugh off the insinuation.

Uphold the Family's honor? Snippet from RISHALT for #WeWriWa

In last week’s snippet, Kiron’s six parents informed him of his “superior reward” - “Our noble Triarch Rostras has approved your new triad for union with three of his granddaughters.”
You can read last week’s snippet here –
Note: I have skipped a few lines in the middle and introduced semicolons to fit.

Unwilling to provoke an argument, Kiron mumbled, “I do not wish for a union at present.”
After a minute of stunned silence, Meldrina shrilled, “Outrageous! You must uphold the family’s honor. Wreckage of your first triad led to our disgrace among the elite of Pucklerakt.”
“Urish; it’s true,” his father added in a tone of mild recrimination, “This match is exactly what is needed to restore our tarnished status.”
“Father, I did not cause the destruction of my first triad,” Kiron said, fighting off anger. “Nor did I ruin my second, involuntary triad. Yet, I am loath to enter a third triad without a respite for reflection.”
His dear mother spoke up, “Our son has only just returned from arduous duty on a remote outpost; he needs time to adjust to life on Rishalt.”
“Very well, he may reflect for a triad of days,” Meldrina conceded, “after that period, we expect his answer.”
